Postdoctoral Scholarship at Netherlands (University of Twente)

Overview
MIRA - Institute of Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, The Netherlands has an opening for two post-doctoral fellows within the research area of Medical Robotics.

What we ask
The successful applicant has completed a doctoral degree in mechanical, biomedical, or electrical engineering, or in a closely related discipline. He or she should possess excellent skills and practical experience in one or more of the following research areas: solid mechanics, finite element modeling, and image processing. Experience at the intersection of one or more of these areas is desirable. Experience with programming and using a commercial finite element analysis package is a plus. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.

About the project
Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized medicine by enabling interventions without large incisions, thereby significantly improving clinical outcomes. Such surgical techniques include insertions of needles, catheters, and endoscopes. For effective medical diagnosis and treatment, the instrument must reach its intended target. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of the procedure and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop methods for modeling the interaction of existing and novel medical instruments with soft tissues and with fluids. These models would be used to track and control the path of the medical instrument using a clinical imaging modality such as ultrasound. The applicant will be closely working with the Clinical Physics Laboratory and Department of Radiology at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Netherlands.

PhD Position ‘Genome Mining for Biological Control’ [Netherlands]

Candidates should be a molecular biologist or plant biotechnologist with affinity to bioinformatics and interest in insect-plant interactions
Study Subject: Biology, Plant Biotechnology or Plant Sciences
Employer: Wageningen University
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: Cucumber is one of the most important vegetables in the world and its genome has recently been sequenced. In the proposed research we will exploit this information to improve cucumber traits involved in indirect plant defense (enhancing biological control) and to identify new genes that are (strongly) induced by spider mites and thrips, two major pest herbivores in cucumber. In response to herbivory, plants release a complex blend of volatiles providing valuable cues for herbivores and their natural enemies. In cucumber, the volatile profile emitted after spider-mite or thrips infestation mainly consists of terpenoids, such as (E)-?-ocimene and (E)-4,8-dimethyl nonatriene. Both components are known to be attractive to predatory mites and other natural enemies. Previous research demonstrated that biological control of cell-feeding herbivores, such as spider mites but also thrips, can be improved by changing the volatile emission either through a GMO approach by introduction of terpene synthase genes or by exploiting the genetic variation in induced volatile emission already present in cucumber. In the research proposed here we will exploit the recently available knowledge about the cucumber genome to facilitate improvement in biological control of spider mites and thrips in cucumber. Hereto, bioinformatics will be combined with metabolic profiling of volatiles and transcript profiling of the genes that encode for their biosynthesis, in various cucumber accessions. Furthermore, we will study the behaviour of various natural enemies of spider mites and thrips. Our integrated approach consisting of bioinformatics, metabolite profiling, transcriptomics and behavioural analyses will lead to the identification of genes and their regulatory sequences that in cucumber are responsible for (induced) indirect defence mechanisms. The anticipated results will lead to improved biological control of spider mites and thrips in cucumber.
Eligibility:
An MSc degree in Biology, Plant Biotechnology or Plant Sciences with a multidisciplinary profile. You should be a molecular biologist or plant biotechnologist with affinity to bioinformatics and interest in insect-plant interactions. Experience with investigating arthropod behavior and statistics will be considered an additional value. You should be a team player with demonstrable experience in collaboration with (bio)chemists, and/or entomologists. You have a good knowledge of the English language (oral and written), and have excellent communication skills.
Scholarship Application Deadline: 14 January 2011

PhD Position in Renovating The Mapping Process at University of Twente

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university, located in Enschede, the Netherlands. Organized over five faculties, the UT offers 20 educational programs ranging from applied physics, public and business administration, communication studies and diverse programs in engineering technology.

The Computer Science department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is one of the largest academic institutions in computer science in the Netherlands. It provides courses in Technical Computer Science, Business Information Technology, and Telematics. In addition, the department contributes to computer science education within other academic programs. The research of the department, spearheaded by telematics and information technology, is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT). The department has about 270 permanent staff members and 1200 students. In the Chair of Databases we have an open position for a PhD student Renovating the mapping Process Project description.

In this project we address the affect of community driven content in the Web, also known as Web 2.0, on geo-referenced data and their processing. This includes the specification on how the processing is done, how it evolves, how this influences data quality, and how to visualize the community driven data in a map.

This open position addresses the issues of changing data processing specifications and the consequences of this. The work will be based on a data workflow formal model supporting stream, batch and query processing of the data. Evolution of a workflow means the change of a subset of the workflow specification. The issues arise when deploying the workflow, thus, the changes getting effective. The challenges are how to evolve in a stream processing environment, how does such an evolution influences data quality and how do changes influence other parts of the data workflow such that further changes are required.

This research has a clear application domain, which will provide more specific research questions. The outlined research questions provide substantial theoretical challenges, while the proposed solutions can be evaluated in the application domain again.

What we ask
We are looking for a candidate with a MSc. degree in computer science, databases, software engineering, mathematics (with a computer science specialization), or an equivalent degree. The work involves both theory (databases and distributed systems) and practice (implementing a research prototype and evaluation in an e-science context). The candidate must provide good communication skills, in writing as well as oral. Your main task will be to do research, but you will be given opportunities to acquire some teaching experience. The selected candidate will be embedded in a joint research project with ITC, Enschede, and will closely collaborate with a PhD candidate from that institute.

What we offer
We offer a full-time PhD position in a dynamic and international environment. The duration of the contracts is four years. The gross salary will range from € 2.042,00 in the first year to € 2.612,00 per month in the fourth year.

In addition, we offer a holiday allowance (amounts to 8%) and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (which is approximately an extra month of salary) and a number of additional benefits. The labor agreements are in accordance with the CAO-NU for Dutch universities.

Information and application
Information can be obtained from Dr. Andreas Wombacher, email: a.wombacher@utwente.nl.

If you can meet the above mentioned requirements, you are invited to send your application letter together with:
