Postdoctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers in Japan

This program was established to assist promising and highly qualified young foreign researchers wishing to conduct research in Japan. It is aimed at providing opportunities for such researchers to, under the guidance of their hosts, conduct cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions, thereby permitting them to advance their own research while stimulating Japanese academic circles, particularly young Japanese researchers, through close collaboration in scientific activities. Such collaboration is also intended to advance scientific research in the counterpart countries. (Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 to 24 months.)

Postdoctoral Scholarship in artificial light and ecosystems at Wageningen University (NCP-WU)

Overview
A post-doc, who will be responsible for the day to day running of the project to assess the impact of artificial light on flora and fauna a large-scale project has been funded by STW, Philips and the NAM.

The project will be carried out jointly by the Nature Conservation and Plant Ecology Group at Wageningen University (NCP-WU) and the Animal Ecology Department of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), in close collaboration with the Netherlands Society for Research on Flora and Fauna (VOFF), Philips Lighting and the NAM.

Especially the collection and analysis of the data from a large scale experiment on 40 different sites are the tasks for the post-doc. After a base line year, these sites will be randomly assigned to different light treatments. Flora and fauna around these sites will be monitored by the VOFF. The two PhD students will carry out in-depth projects on the impact of artificial light, closely linked to the large scale project.

Enthusiastic candidates with a PhD in Ecology or equivalent, experience with large scale data sets, statistical analysis methods and affinity for field work, as evidenced by publications, good social skills and a thorough knowledge of the Dutch flora and fauna.

[Switzerland] Full or Associate Professor of Physical Geography

The Faculty of Science at the University of Zurich invites applications for the position of Full or Associate Professor of Physical Geography We seek outstanding applicants with a clearly demonstrable record of excellence in research and teaching in glaciology and/or geomorphology. Applications are particularly encouraged from the fields of glacial and periglacial geomorphology, landscape change and evolution, climate change impacts, and natural hazard research. A focus on processes in high mountain regions would be an asset.


The successful candidate will lead one of the units of the Department of Geography and is expected to develop a strong, independent research program and manage and deliver graduate and undergraduate teaching (in English or German) within the above area of specialization.We seek evidence of the ability to attract and direct substantial research projects and to collaborate with colleagues both within and beyond the discipline. Experience in collaboration with and knowledge transfer to political authorities is considered advantageous.

The Department of Geography of the University of Zurich is the largest of its kind in Switzerland, with an excellent reputation for research and teaching. Its Glaciology, Geomorphodynamics and Geochronology (3G) unit is internationally well-established and contributes to both undergraduate teaching and MSc and PhD specializations in Physical Geography. [Denmark] PhD Scholarship in Political Science at Department of Political Science, University of Southern Denmark

At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, one PhD scholarship within the programme “Political institutions, political communication and the participation and attitudes of citizens” is available for appointment for a period of three years as of 1 August 2010 or as soon as possible hereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period and the workplace will be in Odense. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

The application should include a detailed description of the PhD project. In addition to a general problem formulation, it should discuss relevant theory, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description must not exceed 8 pages.
The project must relate to the theme of the programme. In particular, we welcome projects dealing with the supply of public communication and the political, institutional, and organizational determinants of political strategies, including political actors’ communication strategies. Applicants are encouraged to adopt a comparative perspective, although this is not a requirement.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the Department’s various activities and spends regular hours at the Department.

[Denmark] Postdoc in Oral Drug Formulation and Bioavailability Assessment

The University of Southern Denmark, Department of Physics & Chemistry offers a position for a postdoctoral researcher for two years in order to develop in-vitro methodologies for quantitative assessment of the interplay between drug formulations and drug permeability over biological barriers. The applicant is expected to start 1 May 2010 or as soon as possible.

Work area and tasks
The work will involve three main topics:
1. Quantification of drug permeability by in-vitro models
2. Scaling impacts of formulations on drug permeability
3. Evaluation of the mechanism of action of selected permeation enhancers

You will join the newly established drug transport and delivery research team and work in collaboration with researchers within membrane biophysics and clinical pharmacology at SDU.
Qualifications
You are expected to have a PhD degree within pharmaceutical sciences and to document experience within several of the following topics:
Solid state analysis of drug compounds and/or formulations by WAXS, DSC, NIR
Manufacture, in-process control and biopharmaceutical assessment of oral dosage forms
Formulation of poorly soluble drugs
Characterization of sub-micron particles, preferably by Flow Field-Flow Fractionation and/or Multi-Angle Laser Light Scattering
In-vitro permeability testing by Caco-2, PAMPA or other models

[Netherlands] PhD in the Modern Histori of Southeast Asia

PhD Position in the Modern History of Southeast Asia at NIOD (Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie)


NIOD currently invites applications for a: PhD-position on the modern history of Southeast Asia 1.0 fte (38 hours), four-year contract.

The Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) is a center for the study and dissemination of knowledge relating to the history of both world wars and their long-term effects on society. Recently, NIOD has formalized its ties with the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS). CHGS was co-founded in 2002 by the University of Amsterdam and NIOD. The primary activities of CHGS are university teaching and scholarly research into Holocaust-and-genocide-related studies. The institute works toward an integrated view of the Holocaust and other cases of genocide.



Applicants are invited to submit an open proposal on an aspect of the history of Twentieth Century Southeast Asia that fits within the NIOD/CHGS research profile (see NIOD research program).

NIOD is a partner in the University-of-Leiden-based Encompass Program. The Encompass Research Agenda is highly relevant for the orientation of the PhD position. Candidates are invited to reflect on the NIOD and the Encompass programs, and in particular on one of the three following topics:
1. Media, communication and the Indonesian revolution
2. Transitional justice in post-Second-World-War Southeast Asia
3. Freedom fighters and their `return` to society

Eligible candidates have completed a Master`s degree in history, the humanities or social sciences. Fluency in English and one Southeast Asian language is required. Passive knowledge of Dutch is preferred.

Applications should include a letter, a CV, a dissertation proposal (2000 words) and two reference letters.

The project is planned to start as early September 1st, 2010 but not later than December 2010.
