JSMC offers a PhD program based on M.Sc. degrees and seeks to attract highly motivated PhD students from various scientific disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, medical sciences, earth sciences, and bioinformatics.
JSMC provides a structured, interdisciplinary, research-oriented PhD program. This is based on extension of existing cooperative research, involves non-university research institutions and includes the direct involvement of companies, with exchanges of results in collaborative PhD projects. The education of young scientists within JSMC is based on top-level fundamental research in microbial communication.
Central elements of doctoral training at JSMC are:

• Cross-disciplinary PhD research projects that are situated in the tension zone between basic research and industrial application
• Promotion of research stays abroad, participation in international conferences and in collaborative projects to give PhD students early international experience and help them network internationally
• Comprehensive training in ‘transferable skills’, e. g. scientific publication and presentation, acquiring research funds, etc.
• Close supervision by a team of mentors to ensure that the students achieve the goals of their PhD projects efficiently within three years.
• Applicants must have – or be about to – obtain a Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g., the German ‘Diplom’) in Natural Sciences or a related field. Students holding a Bachelor’s degree from a research-oriented institution can also be admitted to the program if they have shown outstanding performance (e.g. making a major contribution to a refereed publication).

In general, those welcome to apply will be students with a degree in biology, chemistry, physics, medical sciences, bioinformatics, and earth sciences.
Please check whether your research experience matches the open projects on offer during the current Recruitment Call. Applicants should show a strong interest in the JSMC research program centered on the overarching topic “Microbial Communication”. They should also be willing to engage enthusiastically in cross-disciplinary projects .  Both German as well as international students are welcome to apply. However, candidates should demonstrate adequate competence in the English language as English is the language of instruction at JSMC.
Recruitment Procedure
Application is only possible online via this website. The JSMC Recruitment is a four-stage process:
Stage 1: Statement of Interest

• Please acquaint yourself with the PhD projects offered within the current JSMC Recruitment Call. Download, complete, and submit the “Statement of Interest” form. Please note that applications can only be considered if a completed “Statement of Interest” is received before the deadline .
• Please be prepared to submit your full application within one week following the deadline for submission of the “Statement of Interest”. You may be asked to apply at short notice. However, please DO NOT submit any documents other than the completed “Statement of Interest” form unless you are explicitly invited to do so.

Stage 2: Full Application
Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application (including CV, college or university credentials, list of theses and publications, passport photo, and letters of reference).
Stage 3: Telephone Interviews
Candidates with adequate qualifications may be asked to participate in a telephone interview for further evaluation.
Stage 4: JSMC Recruitment Meeting
Candidates who are selected through the first three stages will be invited to attend a JSMC Recruitment Meeting in Jena, Germany. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by JSMC. Successful candidates will be able to start with their JSMC PhD Fellowship shortly after the Recruitment Meeting (later starting dates can also be arrange
The JSMC Recruitment Meetings are meant as an opportunity for both sides – candidates and JSMC members – to get to know each other. They therefore include various events:

• Candidate lectures (the candidates present their research experience in 10+5 min talks)
• One-to-one interviews with project supervisors
• Visits to Institutes (to get to know the facilities and future colleagues)Get-together with the current PhD Fellows of JSMC

Selection of candidates is by a competitive process where we look at the student’s academic achievements, referees reports, research proposal, publications and experience. The research proposal is particularly important as this helps us judge how well a candidate has thought about their research, how well the research fits with the SICSA scholarships 2011 themes and the potential cross-site supervisory arrangements.
Your studentship application will be considered by the universities that you have listed in your application. They will decide, on the basis of the information in your application, if they wish to nominate you for a SICSA studentship. If they do so, your application will be considered by the Graduate Academy Board.
Your first choice university may decide not to nominate your application for a studentship. In this case, your details will be passed to any other universities that you have included in your application and they may decide to support your application. Applications from students who are not nominated by one of the SICSA partners will not be considered for a prize studentship

We are willing to consider applicants in any area of computer science and informatics but may give preference to students who are working in SICSA theme areas:

The project is part of an international collaborative study of Children’s Commissioners and Ombudsmen, or ‘independent children’s rights institutions’, directed by Professor Thomas with colleagues in Switzerland and the United States (the Research Group on Ombudspersons for Children – RGOC). The international study is focused on how models of independent children’s rights institutions map onto different national contexts, on criteria for independence, and on ways of measuring impact. This particular project will be looking at the latter question.
The aim is to develop methods and instruments for assessing the impact of independent children’s rights institutions on children’s lives, on policies for children and young people, on societal attitudes to children and on children’s participation in society. The research student will be invited to complete a thorough review of the relevant literature, and then to conduct an empirical enquiry, targeted on one or more independent children’s rights institutions, which will be designed to explore and test the reliability and validity of different approaches to measuring impact.

The UT Scholarship is awarded by the Foundation University of Twente Scholarship Programme of the University of Twente. The UT Scholarship is meant for international students who show excellence, both academically as well as socially. The UT Scholarship is awarded for one year of study and is extended for a second year if study results are sufficient. The successful candidate will study how human social arrangements, such as marriage practices, affect patterns of genetic diversity in small communities. Although there is scope to accommodate existing research interests, the successful candidate will develop, implement and test new methods in statistical genetics, and apply these methods to genetic and cultural anthropology datasets. This research will initially be directed toward determining whether human social practices have constrained or directed genetic evolution in the Pacific region, a major focus of my research group.
This PhD scholarship offers a rare opportunity to develop your skills as a researcher within an internationally recognized computational biology research group, while taking advantage of New Zealand’s unique natural and cultural environment. Palmerston North, a university town with a large international community, offers a full range of social and cultural amenities. - A Masters or Honors degree (First Class or equivalent) in computational biology, bioinformatics, applied mathematics, computer science, population genetics, molecular evolution, or other relevant field.
