Scholarship Description: Geoengineering” solutions offer a potential strategy for mitigation of the effects of climate change. Solar radiation management through the injection of particles into the stratosphere is one such solution: the injection of sulfate particles as a consequence of volcanic eruptions has demonstrated the efficacy of this methodology. It is however desirable to engineer particles with superior properties to their natural analogues.
This project aims to address the nature of the optimum particle required through studying the adsorption and reactivity of gas molecules on particle surfaces. This has close parallels with the development of catalysts where understanding these processes is also of fundamental importance. To this end microbalance and other analytical techniques will be applied.
Additionally the apparatus used will be modified to operate at stratospherically relevant conditions. The project will run in close collaboration with a number of different partners including the Central Laser Facility (Harwell Science and Innovation Campus) where adsorption measurements on single particles constrained within optical tweezers will be conducted.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral research position, funded by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Global Research Partnership (GRP), to work with Professor Alain Goriely at the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM). This position is available from 1 March 2010.

OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP. The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, is allied to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first five years the Centre will employ 40 new staff and students.

Growth processes are found in many physical and biological systems such as planetary accretion, morphogenesis, and tumour progression. The project will involve developing mathematical tools for the analysis of growth processes within the framework of continuum mechanics. In particular, the project will focus on accretive growth (the deposition and accretion of new materials on existing surfaces). Accretive growth has applications to physical, biological, and industrial problems, such as planet genesis from dust clouds, secondary growth in trees, glacier and snow buildup, horn and seashell expansion, bone growth, wound healing, coil winding, and surface hardening.

The main goal is to formulate a general theory of accretive growth based on nonlinear elasticity and thermodynamics, and differential geometry. The modelling of specific systems will involve the derivation of coupled nonlinear continuum equations, and the solution of these equations using analytical and numerical techniques.

Applicants should have a PhD (awarded or submitted at the time of taking up the position) in mathematics or related discipline, together with expertise in applied mathematics and continuum mechanics. Experience with modelling of experimental systems and knowledge of differential geometry is desirable.

Proteomic and Transcriptomic Studies of an Explant Model of Equine Articular Cartilage in Response to Pro-inflammatory Cytokines and Growth Factors

Applications are invited from recent graduates with a first or upper second class degree and/or Masters degree in biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, biology or veterinary science to work on a BBSRC CASE studentship in collaboration with the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition.

Articular cartilage degradation is the major cause of synovial joint dysfunction and disability in osteoarthritis (OA) in humans and companion animals. We are currently using in vitro models of articular cartilage to investigate the effects of anti-inflammatory compounds on cell signalling pathways. The aim of this project is to use proteomics and transcriptomics to gain a better biological understanding of how pro-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors influence chondrocyte behaviour and extracellular matrix turnover in the early stages of the disease. This knowledge may also help identify early disease biomarkers. The work will provide invaluable experience as part of the PhD training programme and will include industrial supervision from WALTHAM, a sponsor with an outstanding reputation in companion animal research.

This is an ideal opportunity for an applicant with a keen and agile mind, wishing to integrate state-of-the-art post-genomic techniques to cartilage cell biology and joint pathophysiology. The candidate will be required to establish and maintain explant cultures of articular cartilage, expose them to a variety of biological mediators and apply a range of proteomic and transcriptomic techniques.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other PhD students in our research group working on cartilage biology and share their datasets for data-mining and bioinformatic studies. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic, have good interpersonal skills, be confident working independently and as part of a team, have excellent organisational abilities and have a thorough appreciation of the importance of knowledge management and confidentiality.

The successful student will be registered for a PhD in the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and will be affiliated with the School of Biosciences.

This studentship is for a period of four years and is available immediately. It provides an annual tax-free postgraduate stipend starting at £13,290 per annum to basic science graduates, plus a maintenance enhancement from the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition. MSc by Research Studentship on Fatigue Performance of Laser Peened Aluminium Alloys at Cranfield University, UK

Cranfield University, in collaboration with Airbus and the Open University, has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate. This research aims to understand and model the role of residual stresses produced by the laser peening process in determining the fatigue performance obtained in aerospace structures.

Laser peening is a new generation process for treating the surface of metallic engineering components to produce exceptional improvements in fatigue properties. So far the process has been applied to a limited number of aerospace components as a process of last resort. In this research the possibility of treating the relatively thin aluminium structures used in aircraft fuselages will be explored. The work will explore the improvements fatigue performance laser peening can produce in aluminium alloys, looking in particular at the benefits to structures which have been damaged in various ways during service use and maintenance operations.



If this project is successful it is possible that additional funding for more extensive research towards a PhD could be made available.

The funding for this project has been made possible through a Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award in Resilient Technology.

The project will investigate the use of thermo electric generators in hostile environments, such as those experienced by space probes to the inner solar system. Recent developments suggest that efficiencies close to the theoretical Carnot limit may be possible, but this has not been achieved, with reports in the literature around 10%. The project will investigate the use of a variety of methods including thermogenerators and thermo-tunneling devices and how these perform in regions of high and low temperatures and under simulated solar flares.

This project is due to start in September 2009.

What is a School Studentship?

The School Studentship provides PhD funding to successful applicants to cover fees and a maintenance grant.

What is the value of the award?

For successful candidates the award will cover tuition fees at the international rate, and a maintenance grant of £13,290 per annum.

Who can apply?

These awards are open to international students that wish to commence full-time study in October 2009. You will need to meet the standard entry requirement to the PhD Programme in the Faculty of Business. Applicants must hold at least a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent. How to apply

Entry Requirements for PhD Programmes

Candidates should hold a British Masters degree, or equivalent qualification, with a minimum average score of 60 per cent. Candidates must also meet our standard English language requirement.

Standard English Language Requirements

A pass in an approved test in English is required for applicants whose first language is not English. The approved tests and minimum required scores are:

• IELTS. Scores of at least 6 or more in each section and an overall score of 6.5
• TOEFL. scores of at least 580 overall and 4.0 in the Test of Written English
• Computer based TOEFL. Scores of at least 240 overall and 4.0 in the essay-writing
• TOEFL iBT. We require an overall test result of 94 with the following minimum scores required in each of these sections: Listening 20, Reading 23, Speaking 23, Writing 24.

About the Isambard Research Scholarships

Brunel is pleased to announce the expansion of its research scholarship scheme for 2009 to fully fund up to 30 PhD studentships across the full range of academic disciplines.

The prestigious Isambard Scholarships will be awarded to Home/EU students who demonstrate the potential for research excellence. Successful applicants will join a thriving research community, with Brunel’s recent success in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirming its international research standing.

The awards are funded in part by the Vice Chancellor’s Research Strategy Fund and in part by the Brunel Scholarship Fund, which relies upon charitable donations. The aim of the scheme is to attract excellent candidates to pursue their research at Brunel.

Travel and living costs are not covered in this scholarships.

This Masters course provides core skills and knowledge in the field of Public Health and put an emphasis to social determinants of health. The programme is relevant to both UK and international students who wish to develop the skills and knowledge to take a lead role in areas such as prevention, promotion, protection and international health.

What will I learn?

The MSc Public Health can be taken part-time over three years or full-time over one.
For the part-time pathway, taught modules are arranged in a way that you attend sessions one day a week (Tuesday for the first year, Thursday for the second).

The full Masters consists of a number of 30 and 15 credit modules and a dissertation (60 credits).

Modelling of Acoustic Waves and Bubble Dynamics

Applications are invited, from suitably qualified applicants, to work in the field of Modelling of Acoustic Waves and Bubble Dynamics. The position is funded by a major new project including 17 participating institutions from the EU, as part of the Nanotechnology call of the FP7 European Commission Programme. The project will start during the summer 2009.

The main objective of the project is up-scaling of a pilot line for the production of medical antibacterial textiles by inserting nanoparticles.

The selected candidate will participate in modeling of wave propagation taking into account interactions between ultrasound waves and bubble clouds. A model including bubble formation and collapse will be developed. The boundary element method (BEM) will be used to model multiple bubble dynamics including chemical reactions and mass transfer across the bubble surface due to non-equilibrium evaporation and condensation at the fluid-gas interface.

The candidate is expected to hold a good first degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Physical Sciences. It would be beneficial if the applicant has experience in numerical modelling of waves or fluid flow. Previous experience in programming is desirable. The successful candidate will be registered for a PhD degree and will have a stipend covering the living expenses and fees. The position is for three years.
