Postgraduate Courses on Building Resilience to Climate Change
UNU-ISP invites applications for the new intensive 4-week postgraduate programme on Building Resilience to Climate Change.
The United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP), Tokyo, invites applications for the new intensive 4-week postgraduate programme on Building Resilience to Climate Change, developed under the framework of the University Network for Climate and Ecosystems Change Adaptation Research (UN-CECAR). UN-CECAR is a collaborative initiative of more than 20 leading universities across Asia, committed to develop post graduate educational and research programmes on climate and ecosystems change, adaptation and sustainability science. UNU-ISP acts as the UN-CECAR Secretariat.
The new courses, which will be conducted at UNU-ISP, will cover a range of issues on sustainability and adaptation to climate and ecosystems change. Topics include climate and atmospheric science, impacts assessment, climate and society, ecosystems resilience, risk and uncertainty, integrated solutions for mitigation and adaptation, mainstreaming adaptation into development planning and community-based adaptation. Students also will receive practical training in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and in down-scaling rainfall forecasts.
Assessment will be based on a research paper, presentations, preparation for and participation in classes, and intermediate tests. The courses are practically-oriented and will be taught by highly qualified and diverse team of natural and social science scholars.
Target applicants:
* Students who are currently enrolled in a masters or Ph.D. programme, in any discipline, and
* who wish to deepen their knowledge on, and gain practical training in, building resilience to climate and ecosystems change, and
* who desire a future career as a climate change specialists.
Course Information
The programme runs for four weeks from 28 February to 25 March 2011. It is open to students who are currently enrolled in a university postgraduate programme and who have already identified their thesis topic prior to arriving in Japan; and young professionals with a university degree in various occupations in Japan and abroad.
Course 1 focuses on Science, Impacts and Vulnerability, and Course 2 focuses on Approaches to Adaptation. Students will also be provided training on geographic and climate models and software. Sufficient time will be allocated for students to also complete their research paper. A requirement for the research paper is that students must link their thesis topic to climate change.
Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate of completion and a transcript from UNU-ISP. Each course is designed to be worth 2 credits and comprises of 30 hours of teaching time. While a number of universities have negotiated credit transfer agreements with UNU-ISP, ultimately the decision on whether credits are transferrable will be made by the student’s university. Ajinomoto Scholarship 2011 in Science and Engineering for ASEAN students
This program enables students from five ASEAN countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam) wishing to enroll in a master’s course (major in one of the sciences) at the University of Tokyo, to secure scholarships before their arrival in Japan. It aims to cultivate individuals capable of leading Asia in the twenty-first century and to contribute to the development of Asia and the world as well as to mutual understanding between these countries and Japan.Eligibility
Applicants who wish to enroll in a master’s course and major in one of the sciences (except medicine and veterinary medicine) at the University of Tokyo and who fulfill the following requirements and qualifications.
- Applicants must be citizens of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, or Vietnam.
- Applicants must have graduated or be expected to graduate with an excellent academic record – GPA at least 3.20 (with 16 years of education completed or expected to be completed) and must receive the recommendation of their university president or academic advisor or be otherwise qualified to enroll in the University of Tokyo.
- Applicants must be under the age of 35 on April 1, 2011.
- In principle, the applicant must be able to obtain approval of acceptance as a Postgraduate International Research Student (hereinafter “Research Student”), from the University of Tokyo and be registered as a Research Student for April 2011 or October 2011.
However, the applicant may enroll directly as a master’s course student of some graduate schools in the University of Tokyo.. In that case, the applicant must be able to obtain approval of enrollment from the University of Tokyo and be registered as a master’s course student for Apr 2011 or Oct 2011. - Applicants must have adequate Japanese language proficiency to study as a master’s course student of the University of Tokyo (Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1 or equivalent). Applicants must be able to pass at least Level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (hereinafter “JLPT”) in a test administered no later than December 2010 (candidates wishing to enter as a master’s course student) or December 2011 (candidates wishing to enter as a Research Student). However, applicants who wish to enroll in Information, Technology, and Society in Asia course (hereinafter “ITASIA”)” of Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies does not require above Japanese language proficiency.
- Applicants must apply from the above 5 countries and be able to attend selection procedures when necessary.
- Applicants must be in good physical and mental health and have a strong motivation for learning.
- Applicants must not be receiving other scholarships.
- a) Research Student at graduate school: ¥150,000/month (for max. 1 year)
- b) Master’s course at graduate school: ¥180,000/month (for max. 2 years)
- c) Examination, Admission and Tuition fees: covered in full
- d) Airfare (to and from Japan): covered up approximately to ¥200,000 (equivalent amount for economy class ticket. Actual amount in principle)

Period of Scholarships
Scholarships will be provided for max. 3 years, 1 year studying as a Research Student and max. 2 years studying in a master’s course. The scholarship will be suspended if the scholarship recipient fails to pass the entrance exam for a master’s course within a year after arriving to Japan if the recipient enters as a Research Student.
If the recipient enters as a master’s course student, scholarships will be provided for max. 2 years.

Selection Process
1st Screening and 2nd Screening
All the screening will be based on the received documents, such as research activities and study plans, university transcript and the letter of recommendation.
Detailed description of the documents is required.
For 2nd Screening, additional submission of necessary documents (TOEFL etc. See appendix ２) for applying to preferred graduate schools and graduation or degree certificate may be requested.
Note: An interview will be held for 2nd selection (in English or in Japanese)
Suspension or Termination of Scholarship
The scholarship will be suspended or terminated immediately, and claim the partial or full refund of the scholarship amount if any one of the following conditions applies to the scholarship recipient:
- a) False information found in the application form.
- b) Receives any other scholarship.
- c) Fails to pass the entrance examination to a University of Tokyo master’s course within one year after arriving to Japan (recipient who enters as a Research Student).
- d) Fails to pass at least JLPT level 3 in a test administered no later than December 2010 (recipient wishing to enter as a master’s course student).
Fails to pass at least JLPT level 3 in a test administered no later than December 2011 (recipient wishing to enter as a Research Student). - e) Fails to arrive in Japan by the appointed date.
- f) Shows poor academic performance due to absence, lack of desire to study or being unable to keep up research for some reason.
- g) Has difficulty continuing to study due to illness or other health problems.
- h) Violates the rules and regulations of the University of Tokyo or the Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation.

Note:
The nominated applicants who had passed the 2nd screening must compile all the necessary documents for applying to University of Tokyo, assigned by each graduate school (refer appendix 2 “Documents for 2nd Screening and Required documents for applying as a Postgraduate International Research Student to the University of Tokyo”. The accomplished documents are reviewed by faculty council. For the applicants who are requested to enroll in April, the letter of acceptance will be issued in Jan, 2011. They should take all the adequate process, such as visa, for entering to Japan and will enroll in April.
In addition, the nominated applicants requested to enroll in October should pay attention to the applying period and the date of issuance of the letter of acceptance, because they differ. Please contact with the graduate school you wish enroll for details.

Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) Master and Doctoral Scholarships 2009 at School of International Health The University of Tokyo
School of International Health, The University of Tokyo offers advanced study and research opportunities under the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) for oversea students from ADB member countries. Applicants for this program must have a citizenship or nationality of a developing country among the ADB member countries. The ADB-JSP at our school is designated for the Masters and Doctors Program that usually lasts for two years (for Mastes) and three years (for Doctors) and commences on 1st April every year. Language used in the program is English.
Overview
ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM
The applicants are evaluated by the School Committee and distinguished applicants are nominated as candidates for the program and subsequently recommended to the Asian Development Bank. Admission to the ADB-JSP is finally granted for about five applicants by the Graduate Council of the University of Tokyo based on the recommendation of School of International Health and approval of ADB.
The University of Tokyo maintains an extremely high academic standard with a limited number of students. Admission to the program is very competitive, thus outstanding applicants are expected to apply.
To be eligible for admission to this program, applicants:
1. must be a citizen or national of an ADB member country listed above;
2. must have finished at least 18 years of school education (except language education);
3. must hold a degree from an accredited institution that is comparable to the Master Degree awarded by the University of Tokyo;
4. must have working experience for at least two years in the field of health/medical science;
5. must be aged below 35 years;
6. must not be military personnel;
7. must be able to arrive in Japan between 1st and 10th of April, 2010
8. must agree to return to his/her home country after completion of studies under the Program;
9. must not be living or working in a country other than his/her home country;
* *IMPORTANT: The duration of scholarship is only TWO years although Doctors program lasts for three years.
There is no guarantee that you can take another scholarship for the third year.
* *Applicants already have studied abroad have lesser priority.

FINANCIAL AID
The ADB-JSP scholarship covers admission and tuition fees, subsistence allowance (minimum 150,000 yen per month), economy class airfare and other expenditures including medical/accident insurance.
