JSMC offers a PhD program based on M.Sc. degrees and seeks to attract highly motivated PhD students from various scientific disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, medical sciences, earth sciences, and bioinformatics.
JSMC provides a structured, interdisciplinary, research-oriented PhD program. This is based on extension of existing cooperative research, involves non-university research institutions and includes the direct involvement of companies, with exchanges of results in collaborative PhD projects. The education of young scientists within JSMC is based on top-level fundamental research in microbial communication.
Central elements of doctoral training at JSMC are:

• Cross-disciplinary PhD research projects that are situated in the tension zone between basic research and industrial application
• Promotion of research stays abroad, participation in international conferences and in collaborative projects to give PhD students early international experience and help them network internationally
• Comprehensive training in ‘transferable skills’, e. g. scientific publication and presentation, acquiring research funds, etc.
• Close supervision by a team of mentors to ensure that the students achieve the goals of their PhD projects efficiently within three years.
• Applicants must have – or be about to – obtain a Master’s degree or equivalent (e.g., the German ‘Diplom’) in Natural Sciences or a related field. Students holding a Bachelor’s degree from a research-oriented institution can also be admitted to the program if they have shown outstanding performance (e.g. making a major contribution to a refereed publication).

In general, those welcome to apply will be students with a degree in biology, chemistry, physics, medical sciences, bioinformatics, and earth sciences.
Please check whether your research experience matches the open projects on offer during the current Recruitment Call. Applicants should show a strong interest in the JSMC research program centered on the overarching topic “Microbial Communication”. They should also be willing to engage enthusiastically in cross-disciplinary projects .  Both German as well as international students are welcome to apply. However, candidates should demonstrate adequate competence in the English language as English is the language of instruction at JSMC.

Stage 1: Statement of Interest

Stage 2: Full Application
Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application (including CV, college or university credentials, list of theses and publications, passport photo, and letters of reference).
Stage 3: Telephone Interviews
Candidates with adequate qualifications may be asked to participate in a telephone interview for further evaluation.
Stage 4: JSMC Recruitment Meeting
Candidates who are selected through the first three stages will be invited to attend a JSMC Recruitment Meeting in Jena, Germany. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by JSMC. Scholarships Description: The work of the PhD fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with the research project Epigenetic regulation of plant traits.

The project aims at discover new layers of regulation of plant appearance. In biology, and specifically genetics, epigenetics is the study of inherited changes in phenotype (appearance) or gene expression caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence. These changes may remain through cell divisions for the remainder of the cell´s life and may also last for multiple generations. However, there is no change in the underlying DNA sequence of the organism; instead, non-genetic factors cause the organism´s genes to express themselves differently. The project is part of the program in the Centre for Membrane Pumps in Cells and Disease – PUMPKIN.
The position is available for a 4-year period for applicants who are already enrolled or are accepted to be enrolled at one of the Faculty´s master´s programmes.
At the time of commencement, applicants for the 4-year period must have approximately one year of study remaining before graduating from their MSc programme.
The successful applicant of the PhD scholarship must pass an enrolment in the LIFE Graduate School before the Faculty can finish the letter of employment.

[Denmark] PhD Scholarship in Political Science at Department of Political Science, University of Southern Denmark

At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, one PhD scholarship within the programme “Political institutions, political communication and the participation and attitudes of citizens” is available for appointment for a period of three years as of 1 August 2010 or as soon as possible hereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period and the workplace will be in Odense. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

The application should include a detailed description of the PhD project. In addition to a general problem formulation, it should discuss relevant theory, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description must not exceed 8 pages.
The project must relate to the theme of the programme. In particular, we welcome projects dealing with the supply of public communication and the political, institutional, and organizational determinants of political strategies, including political actors’ communication strategies. Applicants are encouraged to adopt a comparative perspective, although this is not a requirement.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the Department’s various activities and spends regular hours at the Department.

[Denmark] Postdoc in Oral Drug Formulation and Bioavailability Assessment

The University of Southern Denmark, Department of Physics & Chemistry offers a position for a postdoctoral researcher for two years in order to develop in-vitro methodologies for quantitative assessment of the interplay between drug formulations and drug permeability over biological barriers. The applicant is expected to start 1 May 2010 or as soon as possible.

Work area and tasks
The work will involve three main topics:
1. Quantification of drug permeability by in-vitro models
2. Scaling impacts of formulations on drug permeability
3. Evaluation of the mechanism of action of selected permeation enhancers

You will join the newly established drug transport and delivery research team and work in collaboration with researchers within membrane biophysics and clinical pharmacology at SDU.
Qualifications
You are expected to have a PhD degree within pharmaceutical sciences and to document experience within several of the following topics:
Solid state analysis of drug compounds and/or formulations by WAXS, DSC, NIR
Manufacture, in-process control and biopharmaceutical assessment of oral dosage forms
Formulation of poorly soluble drugs
Characterization of sub-micron particles, preferably by Flow Field-Flow Fractionation and/or Multi-Angle Laser Light Scattering
In-vitro permeability testing by Caco-2, PAMPA or other models

PhD Position in Food Science at University of Aarhus

Applications are invited for a PhD position at the University of Aarhus, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (DJF), Department of Food Science. The position is available for three years beginning as soon as possible.

Research area and project description
The current knowledge of how dynamic processes during manufacturing affect crystallisation is limited especially when the milk fat is present in both a continuous phase and as milk fat globules, like in butter. An improved knowledge will help solve certain problems about instability of milk fat-based products. Furthermore, it is desirable to add vegetable lipids to milk fat which renders a softer and "healthier" spread product. Again, knowledge is lacking of how this will affect polymorphic transition of the lipids, and how the processes will affect this.

We are looking for a skilled PhD-candidate to study how heating, cooling and shearing of cream, butter and anhydrous milk fat affect the transition of polymorphic crystal forms and the final solid fat content of the products. In addition, the effects of mixing vegetable oils into milk fat on the polymorphic transitions will be studied.



The PhD candidate for this project must have a general background in food science, physical chemistry or biotechnology. A study visit abroad is anticipated during the PhD.

Applicants to the PhD position must have a relevant Master`s degree (or graduate in the very near future - documentation for final thesis and date of examination must be enclosed in the application) or equivalent.

Denmark - Rosklide University PhD Scholarship in Catchment Hydrology Modelling

A Ph.D. scholarship is available at the Department of Environmental, Social and Spatial Change (ENSPAC), Roskilde University, within the area of “Modelling Spatial Catchment Hydrology Using Earth Observation and Distributed Temperature Sensing of Streams.”

The purpose of the Ph.D. project is to use distributed temperature sensing (DTS) of streams to improve the spatial parameterization and modelling of catchment hydrological processes.

The DTS system uses a long (2 km) fiber-optic cable to provide stream temperature measurements with 1 m resolution. In particular, the system will be used to identify, parameterize and model lateral inflows to the stream, in relation to the spatial characteristics of the upland contributing areas.

The Ph.D. student will be involved in measuring, analyzing and modelling the data, using ancillary information, also.

The scholarship is financed by the Danish Research Council for Technology and Production as part of a larger research project which includes the use of earth observation and other spatial data for modelling hydrological and atmospheric processes (http://www.upscalehydrology.ruc.dk).

The Ph.D. student will be working in the research project group and will be co-supervised by the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Environment) which is also a research project partner.

The Ph.D. student will be affiliated with the Graduate Programme in Environmental Stress Studies (GESS) at Roskilde University.

GESS is an international graduate program that covers a broad range of research topics within the area of environmental stress (http://www.ruc.dk/gess).

Candidates with backgrounds in physical geography or environmental engineering and with an interest in both field hydrology and hydrological modelling are encouraged to apply for the position.

Experience in hydrological modelling, spatial data management, computer programming, field hydrology and/or data analysis is considered advantageous.

Master Programmes - Study Climate Change in Denmark for a COP15 Climate Scholarship

Denmark offers a number of full scholarships within studies of climate change.

Climate change is one of the major challenges that our world faces today. In December 2009, Denmark will host the United Nations Climate Change Summit. To emphasise the importance of sustainable climate solutions, the Danish government is now launching the ‘COP15 Climate Scholarship’ for highly qualified students.

The scholarships, which cover both tuition fees and living expenses, are made available for a range of excellent two-years Master’s programmes, including MSc programmes in wind energy, environmental engineering or sustainable energy planning.

Background

In line with the overall aim of securing a climate friendly Climate Conference, the Danish Government has decided not to give any gifts or conference-kits for COP15 participants. The resources saved is instead used to create the ‘COP15 Climate Scholarship’, which gives a number of international students the opportunity to pursue a masters degree within climate change studies at a university in Denmark.
