PhD Position in the Modern History of Southeast Asia at NIOD (Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie)


NIOD currently invites applications for a: PhD-position on the modern history of Southeast Asia 1.0 fte (38 hours), four-year contract.

The Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) is a center for the study and dissemination of knowledge relating to the history of both world wars and their long-term effects on society. Recently, NIOD has formalized its ties with the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS). CHGS was co-founded in 2002 by the University of Amsterdam and NIOD. The primary activities of CHGS are university teaching and scholarly research into Holocaust-and-genocide-related studies. The institute works toward an integrated view of the Holocaust and other cases of genocide.



Applicants are invited to submit an open proposal on an aspect of the history of Twentieth Century Southeast Asia that fits within the NIOD/CHGS research profile (see NIOD research program).

NIOD is a partner in the University-of-Leiden-based Encompass Program. The Encompass Research Agenda is highly relevant for the orientation of the PhD position. Candidates are invited to reflect on the NIOD and the Encompass programs, and in particular on one of the three following topics:
1. Media, communication and the Indonesian revolution
2. Transitional justice in post-Second-World-War Southeast Asia
3. Freedom fighters and their `return` to society

Eligible candidates have completed a Master`s degree in history, the humanities or social sciences. Fluency in English and one Southeast Asian language is required. Passive knowledge of Dutch is preferred.

Applications should include a letter, a CV, a dissertation proposal (2000 words) and two reference letters.

The project is planned to start as early September 1st, 2010 but not later than December 2010.

The full-time salary is € 2.042 gross per month in the first year, increasing incrementally to € 2,612 in the fourth year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities), plus an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3 % end-of-year allowance, and an extensive secondary benefits package.

Helsinki University declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in organic chemistry at the laboratory of Organic Chemistry, Department of chemistry.

Starting date: March-April 2010.

The project is aimed at the design, synthesis, and characterization of chlorophyll derived sensing molecules that will be integrated on optical fibers to sense ions and organic substrates. The successful applicant will be working with synthetic organic chemistry (ca. 90%), photochemistry, and a variety of spectroscopic methods for structural characterization of organic compounds and their photophysical properties. Photophysical and instrumentation part of the project will be done in collaboration with photophysics laboratory at Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering, Tampere University of Technology (Prof. N. Tkachenko group).

The applicant must have a Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, and an additional full year of studies at an advanced level, including a masters thesis (or equivalent).

In addition, the applicant should provide proof of theoretical and practical knowledge in:

* Synthetic organic chemistry, including practical experience with routine laboratory procedures
* Analytical methods in organic chemistry: Separation and purification (flash chromatography, macroscale and microscale synthesis, mass spectrometry, IR, UV/vis and fluorescence spectroscopy)
* Use of modern NMR techniques for structural characterization of organic compounds (interpretation of routine 1D and 2D spectra, practical experience with state of the art NMR equipment, documentation of spectral data)
* Basic knowledge in supramolecular chemistry, computational chemistry and physical organic chemistry will be regarded as a merit.
General interest for modern organic chemistry and method development is a perquisite for successful performance in the project and research group.

The PhD position is for four years and is free from department duties (teaching). All needed studies (courses, books) can be studied and examined in English. Monthly salary: 1900-2400€ depending of stage of the study, skills and performance.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral research position, funded by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Global Research Partnership (GRP), to work with Professor Alain Goriely at the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM). This position is available from 1 March 2010.

OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP. The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, is allied to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first five years the Centre will employ 40 new staff and students.

Growth processes are found in many physical and biological systems such as planetary accretion, morphogenesis, and tumour progression. The project will involve developing mathematical tools for the analysis of growth processes within the framework of continuum mechanics. In particular, the project will focus on accretive growth (the deposition and accretion of new materials on existing surfaces). Accretive growth has applications to physical, biological, and industrial problems, such as planet genesis from dust clouds, secondary growth in trees, glacier and snow buildup, horn and seashell expansion, bone growth, wound healing, coil winding, and surface hardening.

The main goal is to formulate a general theory of accretive growth based on nonlinear elasticity and thermodynamics, and differential geometry. The modelling of specific systems will involve the derivation of coupled nonlinear continuum equations, and the solution of these equations using analytical and numerical techniques.

Applicants should have a PhD (awarded or submitted at the time of taking up the position) in mathematics or related discipline, together with expertise in applied mathematics and continuum mechanics. Experience with modelling of experimental systems and knowledge of differential geometry is desirable.

China – 2010 Graduate Student Scholarships for International Students

Graduate Student Scholarships for International Students (2010)
(Supported by Chinese Government Scholarship Program)

The Graduate Student Scholarships, supported by the Chinese Scholarship Council(CSC), are provided for prospective international students to study for Master or Doctoral Degrees in top universities in China thus to expand student exchanges and academic collaborations between Chinese Universities and their overseas partnership institutions.

China Agricultural University(CAU) is among the list of the top universities supported by CSC to directly recruit the scholarship students from the academic year of 2008.

I. Basic Information and Duration of the Scholarships Program

1. Up to 25 scholarship students will be accepted to China Agricultural University for the 2010-2011 academic year (normally the academic year in China starts from September).
2. The Graduate Student scholarships only support the students who apply to be fully registered as graduate students (Master or Doctoral students) in CAU.
3. Duration:
The duration of the scholarship for all programs is the same as the normal length of the specific graduate programs in CAU. (Please check the Catalog of graduate Programs for International Students of CAU in the appendix)

If the courses for doctoral and master degree students could not be conducted in English, applicants who are non-Chinese speakers are generally required to take Remedial Chinese language courses for 1 year before their major studies. The one-year Chinese language study is also covered by the scholarship.

Note:
Duration for scholarship specified at the time of admission can NOT be extended in principle

II. Application
Applicants should submit written application materials directly to Office of International Relations in China Agricultural University. The deadline for the materials to arrive at CAU is before January 5, 2010 for the academic year starting from Fall, 2010.

III. Eligibility

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health.
2. Applicants are not studying in Chinese universities.
3. Education background and age limit:
– Applicants for master degree studies must have bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
– Applicants for Doctoral degree studies must have master’s degree and be under the age of 40.

IV. Details of the Scholarship
Full scholarship:

* Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, fee for basic learning materials and accommodation on campus;
* Living allowance;
* One-off settlement subsidy after registration;
* Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China.

Note:

1. Costs of the laboratory experiment or internship that beyond the university’s arrangements should be afforded by the student himself.
2. Fee for basic learning materials covers the necessary learning materials prescribed by the host institution, and other materials shall be self afforded.
3. Monthly living allowance is paid to the students by the host institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
– Master degree students: CNY 1,700 Yuan
– Doctoral degree students: CNY 2,000 Yuan
Scholarship students shall get their monthly living allowance from the date of registration. New students who register before 15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of the living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount. The graduates will be given a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation time set by the university. The allowance will be terminated from the next month after students suspend their studies, drop school or complete schooling from the university. Monthly living allowance covers school holidays. Scholarship students who do not get the monthly living allowance during holidays can get that upon return on campus. The allowance will be suspended for one month if students do not register on time without permission from the university in advance, leave for non-health reasons or are absent from the university over a month.

Students who have to suspend their studies because of serious diseases should go back to the home country and pay for the international trip by themselves. With the university’s approval, the scholarship status can be reserved for at most one year, and their living allowances will be suspended at the same time. The scholarship will be terminated for those who suspend their studies for other reasons.
4. New students will get one-off settlement subsidy upon arrival in China.
– CNY 1,000 Yuan for new students who will study in China up to six months
– CNY 1,500 Yuan for new students who will study in China for one academic year or more
5. Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institution. The students should pay for a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s relevant regulations.
6. Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China is provided by MOE for the scholarship students in China against hospitalizing for serious diseases and accidental injuries. The institutions or the appointed medical assistance agency provide advancement service for insurance expenses, and claim for compensation with relevant payment receipts from the insurance company according to the stipulated insurance articles. The claim of individual student will not be accepted by the insurance company.

The School of Modern languages, Literatures and Cultures at Royal Holloway, University of London, invites applications for a three-year PhD Teaching Studentship in Hispanic Studies, available to UK/EU students first registering to undertake doctoral study in September 2010.

The studentship includes full tuition fees of £3,390 plus a £10,000 bursary each year for a maximum of three years of full-time doctoral study and subject to evidence of satisfactory progress. It is open to applicants working in any area of Spanish or Latin American literature and culture.

Applicants should have native or near native competence in Spanish and English language and hold an MA with at least a Merit (or international equivalent) in an appropriate area of Hispanic Studies.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake an average of 6 hours of undergraduate teaching and marking/examining and/or research support for the School each week during term.
