The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah (http://uuhsc.utah.edu/medinfo/) anticipates the opening of one National Library of Medicine postdoctoral position in August 2009. The position is available to individuals holding a PhD degree in Biomedical Informatics or related fields

(e.g., computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, biology, or cognitive science) and having an interest in developing skills in biomedical informatics. This postdoctoral position is for one year with a second year possible upon satisfactory performance. The focus of the position will be on research under the supervision of a faculty mentor, but there is the potential of taking some informatics course work towards completing a certificate credential. Possible areas of research include: translational informatics, natural language processing, grid and parallel computing, personalized/genomic medicine clinical informatics, and public health informatics. Applicants should be US citizens or have permanent resident status. Germany - University of Bonn PhD Fellowships in Mathematics

Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics

The Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS-Mathematics), embraced by the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, a Cluster of Excellence established within the German government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a PhD program in mathematics based upon the well-known teaching and research tradition of the Department of Mathematics and the Max-Planck- Institute for Mathematics.

There are currently more than 130 PhD students in the program which offers a wide range of lecture courses, graduate seminars, research seminars, and winter/summer schools. The language of instruction is English. Several doctoral grants (Hausdorff scholarships) of 1100 euros per month for a maximum of 3 years can be awarded, beginning October 2009 and April 2010. The grants are supplemented by a family allowance, if applicable. In addition, there are several qualifying grants of 800 euros per month for a qualifying year.

Application deadline 31 May 2009 and 15 January 2010 for admission October 2009 and April or October 2010 respectively.

For 5 students there are particular two-year qualifying scholarships of 800 Euros per month. These scholarships are intended to attract students with an excellent Bachelor degree in mathematics from outside Germany who wish to enter a preparatory phase for our PhD program. There is the option of completing a regular Master degree in this context, if desired. The courses taken in the preparatory phase - all taught in English - can be applied toward a Master degree.

Application deadline for the two-year qualifying scholarships is June 12, 2009.

Switzerland - 2009 ETH ZUrich and University of Zurich PhD Positions in Life Sciences

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several Ph.D. programs that cover distinct areas of the life sciences. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years.

Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. United Kingdom - Bangor University 125th Anniversary Research Scholarships

We are pleased to announce the next stage of our major postgraduate expansion campaign, 125th Anniversary Research Scholarships. A huge number of people have responded to our announcement, so we apologise for the slight delay in moving forward.

At this point, we are offering around fifty PhD studentships and bursaries, spread across all six of our Colleges. They are open to Home/EU and International students. Whilst some are targeted at particular research specialisms, there are flexible opportunities in a very wide range of subject areas. Further opportunities will be announced later in the year.

The scholarships provide opportunities to the very best students, nationally and internationally, to work with the University’s leading academics and rising international research stars. Germany - 2009 University of Lübeck PhD Scholarships in Computing in Medicine and Life Sciences

The Graduate School for Computing in Medicine and Life Sciences (www.gradschool.uni-luebeck.de) at the University of Lübeck invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship.

Students with a master’s degree (or its equivalent) in computer science, mathematics or engineering are invited to apply for admission for winter semester 2009/10 (starting in October).

Research Projects
I. The research focus of the school is described by a branch structure. Currently, two such branches have been specified. Branch one addresses research in Neuroengineering, Navigation and Robotics. This branch is carried by five institutes from computer science, and six institutes of the medical faculty. The research area in this branch is subdivided into the following six fields:

• New Methods for Brain Mapping and Imaging
• Robotics and Neuro-Rehabilitation
• Brain Plasticity
• Navigation Methods in the Deep Brain
• Functional Neuroanatomy
• Human-Computer Interfacing
• Computer assisted minimally invasive interventions

II. The second branch, Computing in Structural and Cell Biology, is carried by six institutes from computer science, two institutes of the medical faculty, and four institutes of the university’s life sciences division. Its fields of research are subdivided into the folllowing seven areas:

• Macromolecular Crystallography and Informatics
• Inhibitor design
• Algorithms in Molecular Biology
• Determination of patterns predictive for protein topogenesis
• Computational analysis of RNA structure
• Workflows for the analysis of whole genome SNP chips
• Adult stem cells

Successful applicants will be entitled to a monthly scholarship of 1250 EUR for 3 years, with an additional child allowance of 400 EUR for one child, 100 EUR for each more child.

For some students, it is required to provide proof of proficiency of either the English language or the German language with a standard language test, e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, DSH, TestDaf.

Based on the application, a small number of candidates will be invited for an interview. The interview begins with a short presentation of the applicant’s master thesis (possibly replaced by a presentation of research work done during prior education or industry employment), followed by a discussion in which the student describes her/his motivation for entering the PhD programme and possible areas of interest.
