United Kingdom – Postdoctoral Research Position in Mathematical Modelling of Growth in Physical and Biological Systems in University of Oxford
Vacancy Reference: BK/09/033
Grade: 7
Salary Range: Starting Salary £28,839-£30,594
Appointment Term: 3 years
We invite applications for a Postdoctoral research position, funded by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Global Research Partnership (GRP), to work with Professor Alain Goriely at the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM). This position is available from 1 March 2010.
OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP. The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, is allied to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first five years the Centre will employ 40 new staff and students.
Growth processes are found in many physical and biological systems such as planetary accretion, morphogenesis, and tumour progression. The project will involve developing mathematical tools for the analysis of growth processes within the framework of continuum mechanics. In particular, the project will focus on accretive growth (the deposition and accretion of new materials on existing surfaces). Accretive growth has applications to physical, biological, and industrial problems, such as planet genesis from dust clouds, secondary growth in trees, glacier and snow buildup, horn and seashell expansion, bone growth, wound healing, coil winding, and surface hardening.
The main goal is to formulate a general theory of accretive growth based on nonlinear elasticity and thermodynamics, and differential geometry. The modelling of specific systems will involve the derivation of coupled nonlinear continuum equations, and the solution of these equations using analytical and numerical techniques.
Applicants should have a PhD (awarded or submitted at the time of taking up the position) in mathematics or related discipline, together with expertise in applied mathematics and continuum mechanics. Experience with modelling of experimental systems and knowledge of differential geometry is desirable.
Further particulars may be obtained from the Administrative Assistant at The Mathematical Institute, 24-29 St Giles, Oxford, OX1 3LB, email vacancies[ at ]maths.ox.ac.uk and at https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/notices/vacancies . Applications should include a Curriculum Vitae, a covering letter explaining your suitability for the position and how you meet the selection criteria, and the names and contact details of two referees.
Applications must arrive by noon on 8 January 2010. Ensure that you clearly quote the reference BK/09/033. Candidates should ask their referees to send their references directly to the Administrative Assistant, Mathematical Institute so that they arrive before the closing date. It is the responsibility of candidates to ensure that their references arrive by the closing date. Interviews for this position will be held late January.
Committed to equality and valuing diversity.

Proteomic and Transcriptomic Studies of an Explant Model of Equine Articular Cartilage in Response to Pro-inflammatory Cytokines and Growth Factors
Supervisors: Dr Ali Mobasheri (School of Veterinary Medicine and Science), Professor Sean May (School of Biosciences), Dr David Allaway (WALTHAM)
Applications are invited from recent graduates with a first or upper second class degree and/or Masters degree in biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, biology or veterinary science to work on a BBSRC CASE studentship in collaboration with the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition.
Articular cartilage degradation is the major cause of synovial joint dysfunction and disability in osteoarthritis (OA) in humans and companion animals. We are currently using in vitro models of articular cartilage to investigate the effects of anti-inflammatory compounds on cell signalling pathways. The aim of this project is to use proteomics and transcriptomics to gain a better biological understanding of how pro-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors influence chondrocyte behaviour and extracellular matrix turnover in the early stages of the disease. This knowledge may also help identify early disease biomarkers. The work will provide invaluable experience as part of the PhD training programme and will include industrial supervision from WALTHAM, a sponsor with an outstanding reputation in companion animal research.
This is an ideal opportunity for an applicant with a keen and agile mind, wishing to integrate state-of-the-art post-genomic techniques to cartilage cell biology and joint pathophysiology. The candidate will be required to establish and maintain explant cultures of articular cartilage, expose them to a variety of biological mediators and apply a range of proteomic and transcriptomic techniques.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other PhD students in our research group working on cartilage biology and share their datasets for data-mining and bioinformatic studies. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic, have good interpersonal skills, be confident working independently and as part of a team, have excellent organisational abilities and have a thorough appreciation of the importance of knowledge management and confidentiality.
The successful student will be registered for a PhD in the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and will be affiliated with the School of Biosciences.
This studentship is for a period of four years and is available immediately. It provides an annual tax-free postgraduate stipend starting at £13,290 per annum to basic science graduates, plus a maintenance enhancement from the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition. Home students holding a recognised veterinary qualification will be paid the enhanced stipend rate of £20,510 per annum as explained in the BBSRC Postgraduate Studentships Guide which is available on the BBSRC web site at: http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/studentships/studentship_handbook.pdf.
Due to funding restrictions, the full studentship is only available to ‘Home’ students according to fee status, based on residence in the UK. This is in line with Research Council requirements. Any other applications will not be considered.
Informal enquires may be addressed to Dr A Mobasheri, Email: Ali.Mobasheri@Nottingham.ac.uk.
Applications should be addressed to Miss H Percival, Postgraduate Administrator, Email: Postgrad-vet@Nottingham.ac.uk.
Further details about how to apply for these studentships are also available at: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/vet/postgraduate/admissions-process.php#online.

[Netherlands] PhD Position at University of Twente
PhD Position in Renovating The Mapping Process at University of Twente
The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university, located in Enschede, the Netherlands. Organized over five faculties, the UT offers 20 educational programs ranging from applied physics, public and business administration, communication studies and diverse programs in engineering technology.
The Computer Science department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is one of the largest academic institutions in computer science in the Netherlands. It provides courses in Technical Computer Science, Business Information Technology, and Telematics. In addition, the department contributes to computer science education within other academic programs. The research of the department, spearheaded by telematics and information technology, is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT). The department has about 270 permanent staff members and 1200 students. In the Chair of Databases we have an open position for a PhD student Renovating the mapping Process Project description.
In this project we address the affect of community driven content in the Web, also known as Web 2.0, on geo-referenced data and their processing. This includes the specification on how the processing is done, how it evolves, how this influences data quality, and how to visualize the community driven data in a map.
This open position addresses the issues of changing data processing specifications and the consequences of this. The work will be based on a data workflow formal model supporting stream, batch and query processing of the data. Evolution of a workflow means the change of a subset of the workflow specification. The issues arise when deploying the workflow, thus, the changes getting effective. The challenges are how to evolve in a stream processing environment, how does such an evolution influences data quality and how do changes influence other parts of the data workflow such that further changes are required.
This research has a clear application domain, which will provide more specific research questions. The outlined research questions provide substantial theoretical challenges, while the proposed solutions can be evaluated in the application domain again.
What we ask
We are looking for a candidate with a MSc. degree in computer science, databases, software engineering, mathematics (with a computer science specialization), or an equivalent degree. MSc by Research Studentship on Fatigue Performance of Laser Peened Aluminium Alloys at Cranfield University, UK
Supported by Airbus, a studentship up to £14,000 p.a. for 1 year plus fees is available.
Cranfield University, in collaboration with Airbus and the Open University, has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate. This research aims to understand and model the role of residual stresses produced by the laser peening process in determining the fatigue performance obtained in aerospace structures.
Laser peening is a new generation process for treating the surface of metallic engineering components to produce exceptional improvements in fatigue properties. So far the process has been applied to a limited number of aerospace components as a process of last resort. In this research the possibility of treating the relatively thin aluminium structures used in aircraft fuselages will be explored. The work will explore the improvements fatigue performance laser peening can produce in aluminium alloys, looking in particular at the benefits to structures which have been damaged in various ways during service use and maintenance operations.
If this project is successful it is possible that additional funding for more extensive research towards a PhD could be made available.
Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme
The successful candidate will attend Cranfield University`s Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme which is designed to equip students with research skills required during their research studies and in their future careers. This programme consists of a series of one-day events, coupled with smaller interactive group sessions.
