School of Health Information Sciences-Institute of Mol Med/Angel Lee Lab, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
Location: Houston, TX, United States
Expires: August 16, 2009
A POSTDOCTORAL POSITION is available immediately to study signal transduction pathways that control the development of the monocyte/macrophage lineage from hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. We are particularly interested in the origin and role of these cells in inflammatory diseases, including cancer where tumor associated macrophages and abnormal myeloid derived cells may have a very important role in tumor progression. Hence a thorough understanding at the molecular level of these cells and interactions with the microenvironment will provide novel therapeutic targets.
Our lab uses cell culture and genetic mouse models and employ flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, retroviral/lentiviral transduction, and RNA interference to address questions of interest as well as a wide variety of standard molecular and cellular biological techniques and biochemical methods. We are also using mass spectrometry to characterize the full spectrum of proteins expressed in myeloid lineage cells. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a demonstrated record of accomplishments. He/she will be expected to
1. develop independence in the design and performance of experiments as well as data analysis,
2. prepare manuscripts,
3. participate in lab meetings and in presentations at scientific meetings,

Nursing Scholarships Program - Nurse Scholarship
Nursing Scholarships
Nursing is a field in great demand. With growing needs, the health services and other agencies require highly qualified and trained nurses each year. But whether you are studying to be a nurse or qualifying yourself further, funding is a great challenge. Paying for a nursing education can be a costly proposition. If you strongly desire to become a nurse, but do not think you can swing the finances involved in such studies, you should see what is available in the way of nursing scholarships. Though there are many nursing school scholarships available to men and woman who dream of entering the field of nursing, you do have to do your research.
You may not consider yourself eligible, but you will be surprised to find that there are nursing scholarships out there that are just for you. When considering a career in nursing, most of seek out financial aid only to find the resulting funds are usually never sufficient. This is the reason that scholarships were created. You have a specific ethnicity that predisposes you to a number of scholarships. Many people wonder if you get a nursing scholarship, can you apply for another. The answer is yes, you can apply for as many scholarships as you want. Whether or not you will get them depends on a number of factors.
How To Find Scholarships To Help You With Nursing School
There are many nursing scholarships and grants available, from federal grants to private funding. There are scholarships offered by schools of nursing, scholarships funded by agencies with specific criteria, by trusts, corporations, as well as individuals.
Do your research well but keep your eyes open for scams. Look up the federal trade commission warnings about scholarship scams. Remember to contact your local nursing association, the state boards of nursing, and the American Nurses Association at www.ana.org. They have tons of guidance as well as information on nursing grants and scholarships.
You can also begin your search for nursing school scholarships at the school that you wish to attend. Most likely, they will have a financial service program for their students. The best way to find this out is to contact the school’s Financial Service Office or speak to the school’s Financial Adviser. Acttually, the best place to start searching for nursing school scholarships is at the colleges or universities where you plan to apply. Every college or university has a toll-free phone number. Call the financial department and ask for help in finding scholarships or grants that apply to your needs and financial standing.
Nursing Scholarships Program
Check with hospitals and medical practices in your area for any grants and nursing school scholarships that are available. They will have lists of grants, scholarships, and even work study programs. They may also be able to help you select the best area colleges and universities. Some hospitals may even agree to pay for your education if you sign a contract with them that states in exchange for your college education you will remain an employee of their hospital for a certain number of years. This is an excellent program that keeps young adults from leaving states after college.
Remember that some scholarships will be restricted to minority groups, low income families, children of labor union organizations, athletic groups, children whose parents are employees of certain businesses, foster children, and honor students. Do not become discouraged when you discover that there is not much out there that fits your needs. Keep searching because you will come across a number of suitable programs. It just takes time.
The criteria for eligibility vary from college to college but would generally be: applicants must be seeking admission to the first year or advanced studies in nursing, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be dedicated to nursing, and have a professional attitude as well as immense amounts of positivity. Requirements would include college transcripts, letters of recommendation, an essay stating why the student chose nursing as a profession, and information of citizenship, ethnicity, and family financial status.
Applying for nursing scholarships has become a relatively easy process. The financial aid office at most schools can aid you in applying for nursing scholarships. In addition, many nursing scholarships can now be applied for over the Internet.
Regardless of your financial or ethnic standings, there are nursing school scholarships available. Stick with it and you can make your dreams of nursing come true.

A. PhD Student in the Field of Skeletal Muscle Modelling with Applications to Lumbar Spine Mechanics
The PhD student is supposed to work on a project focusing on developing novel computational techniques to model skeletal muscles mechanics. The goal is to overcome the computational challenge of realistically modelling lumbar spine muscle mechanics while taking into account the influence of a large number of muscles involved in complex upper body movements.
The skeletal muscles are modelled using the Finite Element method in three dimensions and principles of nonlinear continuum mechanics. For this purpose, a good background in computational continuum mechanics, the Finite Element Method, and some programming skills are desirable.
The position has the designated salary bracket TV-L 13 and a limited tenure of three years with a possible extension. Applications with the usual documents (CV, degree certificates, references, publication list, letter of motivation) should be sent to JP Oliver Röhrle, PhD (roehrle@mechbau.uni-stuttgart.de), Institute of Applied Mechanics, Pfaffenwaldring 7, 70569 Stuttgart, Germany.
B. PhD Student Position in the Field of Multi-scale Simulation of Solids
The PhD student is supposed to work on a project concerned with the computational modelling of phenomena in dynamic fracture through the incorporation of effects from different length scales into the finite element framework. Theoretical foundations of solids at failure show notable discrepancies when compared to experimental results due to the crucial role of dynamic instabilities. On the macroscopic scale, dynamic fracture is experienced by the presence of cracks or shearbands. The influence of the different spatial scales becomes apparent when considering dynamic crack microbranching processes. Applicants with a diploma or masters degree in engineering, mathematics, or physics are invited. The successful candidate should have a strong background in continuum mechanics as well as knowledge in programming and the finite element method.

[Switzerland] PhD Student Position in Medical Image Analysis - Soft-Tissue Segmentation - University of Basel
[Switzerland] PhD Student Position in Medical Image Analysis - Soft-Tissue Segmentation - University of Basel
Within the scope of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) for Computer Aided and Image Guided Interventions (CO-ME) the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC) at the University of Basel is developing methods to segment facial soft tissue.
The available challenging PhD position is part of a larger multidisciplinary project in the field of cranio maxillo facial (CMF) surgery planning. The project involves both theoretical and applied research aspects, and will be performed in close collaboration with researchers of multiple Universities in Switzerland and the MR physics group at the University Hospital in Basel in particular.
The state-of-the-art methods for segmenting anatomical structures in the head for CMF surgery planning require lot of manual intervention and is a time-consuming task. The focus of this work will thus be on automising this tedious manual segmentation task as much as possible. The problem will be addressed by using a model-based segmentation approach combined with optimised MR sequences. These MR sequences are developed in close collaboration with a PhD student from the MR physics group.
This project will be supported by top clinicians in the area. The candidate must have strong communication skills, the ability to combine basic research activities with the needs of clinicians and be willing to work in a clinical environment.
We are looking for a motivated, proactive person with a background in computer science, biomedical engineering, physics, mathematics or other related field. The candidate will have solid programming skills, as well as a good background in general engineering mathematics. A MSc degree or comparable previous experience is required to join the PhD program at our University.
